The Sustainability Squad is a ratified student-led network at George Brown College dedicated to engaging students in environmental issues while helping GBC and the local community to reach sustainability goals. The Squad aims to bridge the gap between sustainability and the student experience through projects and initiatives that benefit students, the local community, and the environment. Students of all levels of interest and experience in environmental studies are welcome to join us as we learn and grow together!
What are the events or initiatives that are associated with the GBC Sustainability Squad?
This semester, the Sustainability Squad continues to look for ways to host events and initiatives for students to take part in while ensuring that everyone is able to stay safe and follow the proper COVID-19 restrictions. Keep an eye out for social media challenges, Instagram live sessions, and sustainable-themed giveaways! There will also be chances for students to share their insights and inputs to help shape future sustainability efforts at George Brown College, and volunteer opportunities to connect students with the Toronto community. Social events like our SquadDocs movie nights will be returning this semester as well!
What are the main goals for the GBC Sustainability Squad?
The primary goals of the Sustainability Squad are to empower George Brown College students through increased environmental literacy and to engage students in efforts to imbed sustainable practices into campus culture. As the college itself has laid out its own Sustainability Plan with specific goals in place for 2022, the Squad is committed to promoting such efforts and assisting with the achievement of sustainability goals at the student level. The Squad also functions as a collaborative network for students who want to learn more about sustainability and to gain first-hand experience working towards environmental justice from a grassroots approach.

What valued experiences will students gain if they make the decision to join GBC Sustainability Squad?
Our team at the Sustainability Squad is made up of students from all backgrounds and disciplines, bringing a range of perspectives and approaches to the projects and initiatives we take on. One truly beautiful thing about sustainability is how far-reaching it is. The way that it intersects with our everyday lives opens up countless doors to connect our efforts to various industries and fields of study. Students who join the Squad and take part in our events will have the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and network with environmental leaders at both the college and community level. As sustainable practices and green technologies represent a rapidly growing market, joining the Squad also gives students the chance to build their resumes, to gain valuable volunteer experience, and to work towards a World Wildlife Fund Living Leader certificate.
#ICYMI: Over the holiday break our GBC #Sustainability Squad spread some cheer by handing out over 60 hot meals and 55 winter gift bags to community members to help alleviate the impact of COVID-19. Way to go @GreenGbc! Read more 👉 https://t.co/ZXhjPaBmR8 pic.twitter.com/9JwCuXF7FK
