INFORMATION FOR VOTERS:

 

Am I Eligible to vote?

  • You are eligible to vote for the Director of Communications and Internal and Director of Operations if you are enrolled full-time post secondary student.
  • You are eligible to vote for Preparatory and Liberal Studies Educational Centre Representative if you are a full time Post Secondary Student enrolled in a program within the Preparatory and Liberal Studies Educational Centre.

Nominations Open:     November 7, 2022

Nominations extended:        November 18, 2022 at 1:00 p.m.

Campaigning starts:     November 21, 2022 at 9:00 p.m.

Voting starts:                 November 28, 2022 at 9:00 a.m.

Voting ends:                  December 2, 2022 at 5:00 p.m.

Can I support a candidate?

If you like what a candidate has to say about the future of your student association and your college talk about it. We encourage you to talk about it on social media, to friends and classmates!  We will however ask you to be nice to everyone running, and not go negative.

 

What do I do if I have an issue with a candidate’s behaviour?

If you believe a candidate had broken election rules, email cro@sagbc.ca and we will get back to you to get some more information regarding what happened and we’ll look into it.

 

How do I vote?

You will receive an email on November 28, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. with a direct link to a ballot, simply click on that link and asked to log in the ballot and vote.  Voting is as simple as that.

General Information

The 2022 Fall Election is being held to elect three positions:

  • Director of Communications and Internal

(for a term January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023)

  • Director of Operations

(for a term January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023)

  • Preparatory and Liberal Studies Educational Centre Representative

(for a term starting upon the date specified in ratification until April 30, 2023)

Eligibility to run

Who is qualified to run?

Under the by-laws you are eligible to be a candidate if you meet the following conditions:

  • Be a member under By-Law 1;
  • Be at least 18 years of age as of the date of ratification; and
  • Otherwise, eligible to be a Director of a Corporation under the Canada Not for Profit Corporations Act, namely not being found incapable of handling property under the Substitute Decisions Act, S.O. 1992, c.30 or the Mental Health Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.M.7 and not having an undischarged bankruptcy under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, R.S.C. 1985, c.B-3.
  • Not be currently employed by the Corporation in any role*; and
  • In the case of the Director of Operations and the Director of Communications and Internal, not currently employed by the Corporation or the College in any role.*
    • For Educational Centre Representatives, you must also be registered within your Education Centre during your term.

*if you are employed by the corporation, you will be placed on an unpaid leave of absence during the campaign and deemed to resign from part-time/full-time employment from Student Association upon election.

 

If you are running for Director of Communications & Internal or Director of Operations you additionally must:

  • Have a GPA of at least 3.0 or greater;
  • Submit a letter of reference to the CRO;
  • Not have discipline on file as an employee, Board of Directors Member, or candidate; and
  • Must attend a session and pass a test after the session regarding the roles of the Board of Directors and the Director of Communications and Internal (this session will be held conjunction with the All Candidates Meeting).

 

Campaigning

Campaigning can begin on November 21, 2022 at 9:00 p.m. You may not campaign before this time.  Please see the candidates handbook for full details.

 

Campaigning on Voting Days

There is no blackout period that prohibits campaigning on voting days.  However, there are several limits on how you may campaign on voting days:

  • Candidate cannot be present or within 10 feet of an elector during the casting of a vote using an online system.
  • Candidates cannot use a personal electronic device to give to an elector to vote on.
  • Candidate cannot amplify their voice or speak loudly to tell an elector to vote or not vote for a candidate.
  • Candidates cannot attempt or ask an elector to show their online ballot.
  • Candidates cannot ask a friend to do anything which they are prohibited from doing on election days.

 

Ballot type and counting

The Election will be conducted online using the Simply Voting System.  Every eligible elector will get log-in credentials at the start of voting, and the elector must use these credentials to log into the voting system and cast their vote.

 

Taking Office

The elected candidates for Director of Communications and Internal and Director of Operations will take office on January 1, 2023, the elected candidate for the Preparatory and Liberal Studies Educational Centre Representative will take office on the date which is specified in the resolution of the Board of Directors.
