International Student Opt-Out

The health insurance plan is mandatory for eligible international students. You may be eligible to opt out if you meet one of the situations below.

Select the option that applies to you:

Studying Outside Canada – Fall 2026 (Online Students)
For International students who are pursuing FULLY ONLINE programs or courses from Outside of
Canada the Fall 2026 term runs from [Fall session], you may be eligible to request a refund of your
health insurance if you:

• Are studying fully online from outside Canada; either residing in your home country or other country
• Meet the eligibility requirements
• Submit your application by the deadline

Eligible students include:

• Students who previously opted out and continue studying outside Canada.
• New or returning students who were charged the health insurance fee while studying outside
  Canada.

Deadline: Oct 1, 2026 (Canadian Eastern Time)

Please notify us via email at HealthBenefits2@sagbc.ca by Oct 2, 2026 – no exceptions if you do not
reside in Canada.

Studying inside Canada – Fall 2026 Covered Under OHIP (Provincial Health Insurance)
If you are covered by OHIP (or another eligible provincial health plan), you may apply to opt out of the international health plan in your initial semester.

Before applying, please ensure your provincial coverage remains active for your entire study period. If you opt out, you are responsible for any medical expenses not covered by your provincial plan.

⏳ Processing Time
Applications are reviewed after the opt-out deadline has passed. Please allow time for processing before
contacting our office. In general, students can expect to receive their insurance fee refund by the beginning of November if they opt out during the Fall semester, and by the beginning of March if they opt out during the Winter semester.

Family coverage
Any students under our student plan can purchase the dependent coverage for their family members (spouse, common-law partner and/or children). To obtain more details about the costs and the application portal, please visit www.alumo.ca

Change your plan – Extended health & Dental
All eligible students are automatically enrolled in Balance Plan. You can choose one of the other Enhanced Plan options that best suits your needs during your starting semester by the deadline.
