Call for Nominations

The Student Association of George Brown is accepting nominations for the vacant position of Director of Operations.

The Board of Directors will appoint a qualified student at its meeting on Monday, September 21, 2026

This appointment is only for the rest of the current term – ending December 31. 2026.

A separate election will be held in November for the next full term, which begins on January 1, 2027.

About the Position

The Director of Operations is a voting member of the Board and a member of the Executive Committee.

The Director must act honestly, make decisions in the best interests of the Student Association, and use reasonable care when carrying out their duties.

The Director of Operations is responsible for:

· reviewing the Student Association’s finances;

· reporting to the Board about the financial position of the Student Association;

· serving as a signing officer for cheques, contracts, and other documents;

· chairing the Operations Committee;

· helping review the annual budget;

· reviewing budget updates, student fees, and major spending plans;

· making recommendations about the external auditor;

· monitoring Board and event spending;

· helping prepare the monthly Board Accountability Report;

· helping make sure Directors follow the By-laws, policies, and Code of Conduct;

· reviewing requests for financial support or co-sponsorship;

· submitting a written report to the Board each month;

· preparing a transition report for the next Director; and

· serving on committees assigned to the position.

Hours and Pay

The Director of Operations is expected to work 28 hours each week. This is a paid position at the rate of $17.60.

At least 24 hours each week must normally be worked in the office during the Student Association’s regular hours. The schedule must be regular and predictable. The remaining hours may include approved meetings, student activities, conferences, and other work listed in the Director’s work plan.

 

Nomination Timeline

Friday, September 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Nominations close. Late or incomplete packages may not be accepted.

Friday, September 18, 2026 Eligible nominees will receive instructions for the Board meeting.

Saturday, September 19, 2026 Nominee information will be sent to the Board.

Monday, September 21, 2026 The Board will hear from the nominees and make the appointment.

 

How to Apply

Each nominee must send a complete package to the Acting Chief Returning Officer. The package must include:

1. a cover letter;

2. a résumé;

3. a short candidate profile; and

4. The nominations form.

 

Who May Apply

A nominee must:

· be a member of the Student Association;

· be at least 18 years old by the appointment date;

· be legally allowed to serve as a corporate director;

· have a grade point average of at least 3.0 from their most recent academic term;

· be in good academic standing;

· not be employed by the Student Association (and if you are you must resign before taking office);

· not be employed by George Brown College and if you are you must resign before taking office);

· be able to work the required hours;

· take no more than 50 percent of the normal course load for their program at the time of taking office;

· agree in writing to follow the job description and governing documents; and

· meet all conduct and eligibility rules in the By-laws.

A nominee must not have been removed, suspended, impeached, or disqualified from a Student Association election during the previous three years. A nominee must also not have been found responsible for serious misconduct under the rules listed in the By-laws.

A person may serve in an executive position for no more than three terms within a five-year period.

A continuing student will not be disqualified only because they did not take summer courses. They must still be active in their program, be able and willing to return in Fall 2026, remain in good academic standing, and meet all other requirements.

 

Appointment Meeting

At the September 21 meeting, each eligible nominee may speak to the Board for up to three minutes. Board members may then ask questions.

The Board will vote by secret ballot.

A nominee must first receive two-thirds of the votes to be appointed. When no nominee receives enough votes, the nominee with the fewest votes will be removed from the next ballot.

When only two nominees remain, the Board may hold up to three more ballots. If neither nominee receives two-thirds of the votes, the nominee who receives a simple majority will be appointed.

 

Term of Office

The successful nominee will take office after the appointment and after completing any required forms and training.

The appointment will end on December 31, 2026.

The person elected in November will begin the next full term on January 1, 2027.
